President’s Cup Schedule, Rules & Match Formats

The match-play competitions between a mixture of the two 12-man rosters listed above include various formats throughout the four-day event. There will be 30 total points available for the teams to fight for. Once either of the two teams snags 15.5 points they will have won the event and take home the President’s Cup Trophy. Here’s a quick snapshot of the daily schedule & match-play formats for each day of competition.

Schedule & Formats
  • Thursday: Foursomes – starting at 10AM PST
  • Friday: Fourball – starting at 8:30AM PST
  • Saturday: Two-session day – Foursomes & Fourball – starting at 4:00AM PST
  • Sunday: Singles – starting at 9:00AM PST
Formats Explained

Foursomes: Two players are paired with each other against two players from the opposing team. Each two-player team will play one single golf ball and alternate taking shots until they finish the hole. Tee shots will be alternating; meaning regardless of who holed the putt on the previous hole a player can’t use their tee shot for any consecutive holes. Scoring for foursomes is the same as any other match play format.

Fourball: Once again two players are paired with each other against two players from the opposing squad. Each player will play their own golf ball and finish the hole as normal. The lowest score from either of the two-player teams is used to determine the outcome of the hole. An example would be if Hideki Matsuyama scores a par & Adam Scott scores a birdie the team would use Scott’s birdie for that hole. Normal match play scoring is used to determine the match winner.

Singles: This one is straight forward. It’s one-on-one single matches and the scoring remains traditional match play tallying.

  • 2022 President’s Cup Outright Winner (ML): USA (-750) – The United States team is just too loaded from top to bottom. They may get some heat early in the competition but when the dust settles we don’t see a way the International squad touches the trophy.
  • Day 1 Winner (ML): USA (-225) – We like USA taking the Day 1 Foursomes by a score of 3/2
  • Top Points Scorer for either team (ML): Patrick Cantlay (+650) ; Tony Finau (+1200) ; Sung Jae Im (+1800) ; Corey Conners (+3000) – These are our best play predictions
